Insulation Resistance Measurement

WHAT IS AN INSULATION TEST?

An insulation test (ISO test) is an electrical test that is carried out to check the insulation integrity of an electrical device or electrical system. During this test, the insulation resistance between the live parts and the non-current-carrying parts of the device is measured.

This is done by applying a high voltage to the parts to be tested and measuring the insulation resistance.A high insulation resistance measurement indicates that the insulation is intact and that there are no unwanted electrical leakage currents. An insulation test is important to ensure the safety of electrical devices and to minimise the risk of electric shocks or other electrical hazards.

HOW IS AN INSULATION TEST CARRIED OUT?

Here are the basic steps for carrying out an insulation test:

  1. Preparation: Make sure that the device is switched off and disconnected from the power supply. Also check that the tester is working properly and is calibrated.

  2. Connecting the test device: Connect the test device to the device connections to be tested. Ensure that the connection is firm and secure.

  3. Setting the test voltage: Set the desired test voltage on the test device. The test voltage depends on the specific requirements of the device or the standard to be tested.

  4. Performing the test: Switch on the tester and start the insulation test. The tester generates a high voltage which is applied to the device or component. The test duration may vary depending on the requirements.

  5. Evaluation of the result: The measurement results are given in ohms. There are various standards and regulations that specify the minimum values that must be observed for the insulation resistance.

The safety guidelines in accordance with EN 50191 must be observed throughout the entire procedure. It is important that the test is carried out by trained personnel, as high voltages are used and this can lead to dangerous situations. In addition, the cables or devices to be tested should be de-energised before the test in order to avoid accidents.

In this way, we ensure that the tested products are not only safe, but also reliable and durable. Our commitment to quality and safety makes us your trusted partner in insulation testing.

Diverse applications of insulation testing for electrical safety

Insulation testing is essential in many industries as it ensures the electrical safety and functionality of equipment and systems. In power engineering, it tests the insulation of cables, transformers and switchgear to ensure the reliability and safety of power grids. These tests prevent electrical failures and ensure a stable energy supply.

In the manufacturing of electrical appliances, insulation testing is used to ensure that household and industrial machines meet prescribed safety standards. This includes checking motors, controls and other components to minimize the risk of short circuits and electric shocks.

For the aerospace industry, insulation testing is critical to ensure the safety and reliability of electrical systems in aircraft and spacecraft. The testing ensures that the systems can withstand extreme conditions and operate reliably.

In the medical technology sector, insulation testing is essential to ensure the safety and performance of medical devices such as dialysis machines, heart monitors and other life-saving equipment. These devices must meet strict safety standards in order not to endanger the health of patients.

By applying insulation testing in these diverse areas, we help improve the safety, reliability and service life of electrical equipment and systems. Our testing methods help identify and correct potential weak points at an early stage, thereby increasing operational safety and efficiency.

Safety standards in insulation testing for the highest quality

Safety standards are crucial in insulation testing to ensure the integrity and reliability of electrical systems. These standards include international standards such as IEC 61010 and IEC 61557, which establish specific requirements and test procedures to ensure that electrical equipment can operate safely. These standards serve as a reference for the development of test protocols and guarantee standardized test conditions.

Our certification processes ensure that only experienced and qualified specialists carry out the tests. Regular training and further education of our employees ensures that they are always up to date with the latest technology and regulations. Compliance with strict safety regulations such as IEC 60364 for low-voltage systems and IEC 60664 for insulation coordination in low-voltage systems minimizes potential hazards and maximizes operational safety.

In addition to international and national standards, many companies develop their own, often even stricter internal safety guidelines. These are based on extensive experience and industry-specific requirements to further improve the quality and reliability of insulation tests. By strictly adhering to these safety standards, we ensure that our testing procedures meet the highest requirements and that the safety of the tested products is guaranteed. In this way, we create trust among our customers and contribute to the further development of safe and efficient technologies.
